County’s new terminal building ready for business
Ribbon-cutting, grand opening ceremonies this week
LIBERTY — The county will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Pickens County Airport’s new terminal building 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 26.
The public is invited to attend the ceremony, which marks the completion of the $1 million dollar project.
The county will hold the terminal’s grand-opening 10 a.m. — 3 p.m. Saturday, June 27.
The 4,000 square foot new facility will include a passenger lounge, office space for airport officials and a meeting room, airport officials said.
The current terminal facility does not allow for a complete view of the runway, but the
new facility will allow for a total view, with an enclosed observation and lookout area.
According to a survey by the state Division of Aeronautics, the Pickens County Airport contributes more than $10 million to the local economy, directly or indirectly.
Last month, the county’s total airport improvement project hit a snag, as Federal Aviation Authority official told county staff that a taxiway at the airport would have to be moved, as there was not enough clearance between the taxiway and the airport’s proposed box hangars.
County Administrator J. Chappell Hurst told council that the taxiway would have to be moved about 25 feet, but that funds were available to do so.
Council had previously allocated $1 million for hangar construction, but construction came in under budget, with $600,000 available for the taxiway move.

In other county news, County Council will move to a summer schedule of meetings during the next three months, holding one meeting instead of two for July, August and September.
Those meetings will be held July 20, August 17 and September 20. Each meeting will include a public input session, normally held during the first meeting of the month.
County council meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers at the county administration building.
