Authorities believe the shootings were a murder and an attempted suicide.
According to Seneca Police Department incident reports, officers responded to a 911 call to the Upstate Pain Management and Surgery Center on U.S. 123 at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 20.
Dr. Marion McMillan met officers upon arrival and said that, after arriving at the office to drop off some items, he discovered a male housekeeping employee with a gunshot wound to his head, the report stated.
Police found the wounded man in a room with a female, who had also been shot.
Karla Benson, 29, of Newry, was pronounced dead at the scene, Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis said.
Benson was shot twice, once in the shoulder and once in the head, Addis said.
Autopsy results revealed that Newry was pregnant at the time of her death.
The fetus’ age was estimated to be 24 weeks, Addis said.
Two handguns were found at the scene.
James Baskersville, 52, of Easley, was transported to Greenville Hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition, Seneca Police Chief John Covington said.
Baskersville has been employed part-time at the clinic for nearly eight years, Covington said.
Benson was not a clinic employee, he said.
No charges have been filed, due to Baskersville’s condition, and authorities are also waiting on ballistic and forensic results from the State Law Enforcement Division.
