Easley finished second place in Region VII, earning a playoff spot. By the seedings, Easley knew it will play another second-place team in the first round of the playoffs.
“That’s the way it works in American Legion,” said Post 52 coach Gregg Powell. “The first-place teams play third-place teams in the first round and the second place teams play each other.”
With the series between second-place teams, a coin toss is used to determine which team will have the home field advantage for games 1, game 3 and — if necessary, game 5 in the best-of-five series.
The coin-toss was held Monday and Easley came out on the good end.
Years ago, playoff series in American Legion baseball had the higher seeded team hosting games one and three, and the lower-seeded team hosting games two and four. The host team for game 5 would be determined by which team sold the most tickets at home in the first four contests.
This led to the lower seeded team often hosting the fifth game of a tournament, as that organization would know how many tickets would have to be “sold” in order to secure home field in the series finale.
Easley’s opponent for the tournament has not yet been determined, as other teams across the state continue playing through Wednesday night, making up games that were delayed due to weather.
Easley’s opponent will likely be either Spartanburg or Inman.
Post 52 finished the regular season with a 10-7 win over Walhalla Friday night. Since it was the final regular season game, Powell decided to start all the 19-year-olds on the team, who will not be eligible to play.
“We wanted to make sure everyone had the memory of starting at least one game,” Powell said. “Because we were trying to start the older players, not all of the positions worked out, so we had some guys playing were somewhere where they normally don’t. But everybody pitched in and did a good job.”
Powell also had to improvise at the pitching position.
“We had planned to start Jacob Fowler, but he was out after surgery on his hand,” Powell said. “We thought he might be back, so the pitching was a game-time decision.”
Powell opted to start Jamie Gray. Gil Vaughn and Matt Whitworth each pitched some innings before Jeremy Mason came in to close out the game.
“It was kind of a ‘pitching by committee’ thing,” Powell said. “They did their jobs and we got the win.”
