Monday, officials voted to continue operating the Greenville Shriners Hospital, as well as five others being considered for closing.
The Greenville facility was slated to close because of lack of funds, but Shriners officials said their $7 million shortfall was resolved through cutbacks in recent months.
Following an announcement that the hospital may close, many Upstate residents cried out against the possibility and raised funds for the facility, including members and supporters of the Pickens County Shrine Club.
According to officials, the hospital has raised three times as much money this year than it did last year.
However, the board of trustees is still voting on other proposals this week, and there is a possibility they could vote to cut the hospital’s budget by 25 percent, according to Rodney Brown, chairman of the Board of Governors for the Greenville facility.
If that happened, the hospital wouldn’t be able to stay open, he said.
The 135th Imperial Council Session of the Shriners is being held this week in San Antonio, Texas.
