The Easley Progress

Wednesday, July 18, 1984

• Anderson County Council made an attempt to bock the construction of a $6.5 million sewer plant that the city of Easley planned to build just inside Anderson County lines.

• An Easley-based coalition opposed the building of a dam on the Horsepature River.

• Local people reacted to Democratic Presidential candidate Walter Mondale’s choice of Geraldine Ferrero as his running made for the 1984 election. Ferraro became the first woman to be on the Presidential ticket for a major party, and remains the only Democrat to do so.

• Easley Baptist Hospital installed its first mammogram machine.

• Ralph Greer, a 75-year-old retiree from Texas, stopped by the offices of The Easley Progress to share memories of when he had worked for the paper in the 1920s.

• Obits were printed for John Parker Jeffcoat, Willard Corbin Ramey, Boyce Landrum, Clayton, George Raymond Trotter, Walter Grady Bishop, Mertie Smith Nalley, Matthew Eugene Frady, Annette Blance Grett, Connie Freeman Hunt, Curtis George Hamilton and Ethel Lawrence Morgan.

• Wedding announcements were printed for Claire Verna Cantrell to Kenneth Eugene Grant, Laura Elizabeth Love to Robert Joseph Hanna, Michelle Renee Riggins, to Franklin Wade Watson, Brenda Gail King to Franklin Eugene Eldridge, Margie Ann Pepper to Kenneth Butler Vest, Rhonda Gail Dean to Howard Dale Lance, Amy Southerlin Belcher to 1st Lt. James Edward McDavid IV, and Pamela Sue Garrick to Jackson W. Duncan Jr.

• Engagement announcements were printed for Cheryl Ann Venable to Tommy Joe Pitts, Debbie Ann Martin to Randy Morris, Susan Jane Griggs to Larry Scott Hendricks, Teresa Carol Davis to William Earl Handley III, Norma Katherine Truesdale to John William Jenkenson Jr., Sharon Eugena Smoak to David Scott Lingerfelt, and Ginny Whitfield to Donald J. Dodd.

• Mary Virginia Mansell celebrated her 93rd birthdays.

• Other birthdays featured in the paper were Candis Suszanne Duncan, 2, and Brandy Renee Caldwell, 1.

• Twins Ellena Mary Cook and Anna Kathleen Cook were born.

• The owner of the Easley Drive-In was found not guilty of violating the state’s Blue Laws by showing a movie on Sunday night. The Drive-In and The Colony both had advertisements in the paper for more movies the following Sunday.

• Births at Easley Baptist Hospital included Deanna Faye Berryhill, William Allen Pressley, Ricky Geln Edgar, Debra Jean Cox, Catherine Maria Hendrix, Ronald Dean Hopkins, Ricky James Madden, Lepedee Scott Gibson, Janice Estelle Kennemer, Carrie Delouise Freeman, Ricky Alton Maxey, Dennis Mitchell Gillespie and Donna Sue Robinson.

• Southern Bell decided not to close its Easley office, as had been earlier announced.

• The Easley High School Athletic Booster Club celebrated its second anniversary.

• Obituaries were printed for Mack C. Powell, Luther William Holcombe, Eugene Franklin Knight, Dick Freeman and Esther McGaha Moore.

• The Rev. C.L. Smith of Pasaguola, Miss., was named pastor of Arial Methodist and McKissick Memorial churches.

• The Rev. Robert Hawkes of Westminster was name the pastor of Easley Mill Methodist Church.

75 Years Ago

• Dr. Robert Perry Jeans of Clinton moved to the Easley area.

• Dozens more threw their hats in the races for various offices in the upcoming primaries.

• Lena Mae Heaton Clarke died at age 45.

• Elizabeth Williams wed the Rev. George Harris.
