OCONEE COUNTY — An Easley teen died after a single-car accident in Oconee County Sunday morning.

Robert Austin McCollum, 16, of 503 Hamlin Road, Easley, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which took place at 11:45 a.m. on Rocky Gap Road, 19 miles north of Walhalla, Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis said.

“The first 911 call came in around 12:32 p.m.,” he said.

McCollum was driving a 2004 Ford Focus south on Rocky Gap Road when the accident occurred, said Lance Cpl. Jeff Gaskin with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The vehicle left the left shoulder of the road, overturning and ejecting McCollum, Gaskin said.

McCollum, a Wren High School student, was not wearing a seat belt, Addis said.

Speed is believed to be a factor, Gaskin said.

A passenger, Elijah Childs of Greenville, McCollum’s cousin was taken to Greenville Memorial but is expected to survive, Gaskin said.

Investigators believe that Childs was not restrained either, he said.
