Thursday, July 26, 1934

• Joe Harris, 10, died after a week’s illness. His mother, Mrs. Columbus Harris, fell at the doorstep of her home. Joe rushed to the mill to get his brother. The strain of running so fast was too much for him, and he overheated. He developed pneumonia and died a week later.

• Central police chief W.A. Gaines was bitten by a mad dog.

• The county tennis tournament was set to be played on the Easley tennis courts.

• Julian Riggins, an agriculture student at Easley High School was the winner of the state contest in corn, yan and soil improvement.

• Mrs. Gussie Hamilton Chappelene died.

50 Years Ago

July 22, 1959

• The Pickens County Delegation came out against the closing of Maw Bridge Road. The Army Corps of Engineers requested the road be closed due to the danger of flooding from the new Hartwell Dam.

• T.F. Casey was elected Commander of American Legion Post 52 in Easley.

• Charlotte Anne Irby wed Robert Elkin Barmore.

• Engagements announcements were printed for Linda Carolyn Simmons to David Walton Youngblood and Barbara Ann Tumlin to Douglas Lawton Turner.

• Birth annuncements were printed for Amanda Gail Posey, Robert Harris Sams, Sharon Kay Jutz, James Larry Nalley Jr. and William Reed Snead Jr.

• Obituaries were printed for J.BV. Finchess, Mamie Rice and Claud A. Lark. Lark died when his dump truck wrecked and turned over on top of him.

• Thirteen Southern Railwy cars derailed between Easley and Liberty.

• Easley police arrested a Greenville man who was wanted in connection with the shooting death of his wife.

• Dates were set for the annual Foothills Festival, to be held in Easley’s Foothills Mall.

• A group of Cateechee residents asked Environmental Protection Agency officials to look into the possible dumping of PCBs in to the Twelve Mile River.

• Obituaries were printed for Bruce Granger, Bennie McKinney, Mattie C. Morris, Elizabeth Harris Owens, Charles McAlister, John Wesley Mize, Kay Osborne Banks, Eddie Pettigrew, Alvin Kirksey and Allene Clayton Hoyt.

• Wedding announcement were printed for Christine Bagwell to Ernest A. Burrell; Teresa McAlister Brown to Robert L. Gunn, Vicki Teresa Speed to Joseph Jackson Gaines Jr., Kelley Lynne McKinney to Alan Clay Spearman, Tamela Ann Kirby to James Mark McCollum, Jenny Elizabeth Donald to Gregg Scott Powell; and Claire Cely Winsloin to Charles Edmund Payne.
