CARTERSVILLE, Ga. — Hailing from the home of the Big League World Series, a team of young baseball players are headed to Taylor, Mich., the home of the Junior League World Series.
The Easley Juniors All-Stars earned a spot in the Junior League World Series by winning the U.S. Southeast Title Wednesday, defeating North Carolina 6-4 in the championship game.
Easley, the South Carolina State Champioins, had been assigned to Pool B in the tournament with Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Easley opened pool play with wins over Tennesee (12-5) and West Virginia (10-9), but fell to Virginia (8-7) in the final game of pool play.
Easley’s 2-1 record was good enough to earn the team a spot in the semi-finals, playing Pool A first place team Florida. Easley topped Florida 6-5.
Easley gained a little bit of revenge for last year’s South Carolina state champs Northwood of Greenville, who were eliminated by Florida in the semi-finals of the 2008 JLWS.
Meanwhile, North Carolina — the second-place team in Pool A — upset Virginia 5-4 in the other semi-finals game, setting up Wednesday’s championship match.
The win marks the first time an Easley team has won a regional tournament to advance to a World Series at any level.
S.C. District One has an automatic spot in the Big League World Series, which Easley hosts.
The last time a team from Easley played in the Junior League World Series was in 2003.
Like the BLWS, the Junior League World Series is divided into a U.S. Pool and an International Pool.
Easley will be in the U.S. Pool with teams from the U.S. Southwest (Abuguerque, N.M.), U.S. West (Scottsdale, Ariz.), U.S. East (undetermined at press time) and U.S. Central (undetermined at press time).
The International Pool includes Canada, Puerto Rico, Asia-Pacific (Siapan), EMEA (Italy) and Latin America (Aruba).
There will be a new champion, as last year’s champs — Curacao — did not advance to the 2009 JLWS.
Easley’s schedule for the tournament is as follows:
12 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 16 — Easley vs. U. S. Southwest.
8 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 18 — Easley vs. U.S. West.
2 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 19 — Easley vs. U.S. East.
8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 20 — Easley vs. U.S. Central.
Semi-final games are scheduled for 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., Friday, Aug. 21.
The championship game is set for 5 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 22, and will be televised on one of the ESPN family of stations.
