First Pickens County Honor Flight set for Wednesday

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The first Honor Flight for Pickens County World War II veterans is set for Wednesday, Sept. 9.

The chartered flight is scheduled to leave the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport at 9 a.m. and land in Washington at 10:30 a.m.

The first thing on the agenda there will be visiting the World War II Memorial.

After lunch, the veterans and caretakers will visit the Vietnam, Korea, Lincoln ad Iow Jima memorials.

The final activity of the day will be a trip to Arlington Cemetery to witness the changing of the guards and visit the tomb of the unknown.

The Honor Flight group is schedule to return to Greenville-Spartanburg Airport shortly before 8 p.m. that night.

Honor Flight is an organization whose purpose is to raise money to send World War II veterans to see the memorial built in their honor. Pickens County Honor Flight has been a project of the local American Legion chapters and the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office.

A second trip is planned for early November.
