Liberty Middle opens volleyball season

LIBERTY — Liberty Middle School Lady Eagles opened their volleyball season last week with two home games. In the Tuesday evening opening game the team went up against Southwood. The Liberty girls took command of the match early on and won 25-13 and 25-13 in the first two sets. The younger players then took the court for set 3 and proved themselves as they wrapped up the match with a win of 25-19. This was valuable experience that will aid depth to the volleyball program.

Several girls contributed excellent serving during the match: Kenzie Alexander served for 8 straight points with 2 aces, Jordan Kirby served for 6 straight points, and Morgan Lance served for 5 in a row with 2 aces. Setter Kenzie Alexander connected with Emily Clardy several times for spikes including 1 kill.

On Wednesday, the Lady Eagles faced off with the Powdersville Patriots. The Eagles had a rough start as their serves were not accurate and lost the first two sets 19–25 and 15-25.

In set 3, the Eagles came fighting back and won the set 25-20. Set 4 became a real challenge as the teams continued to battle it out. The Lady Eagles seesawed back and forth with the Patriots with the lead changing several times. The game went into extra points and the Patriots came out on top 28 -26.

Setters Kenzie Alexander and Courtney Kelley combined to set for Emily Clardy and Hannah Clements for many of the Eagles’ points. Clardy had 16 spikes with 2 kills and Clements had 5 spikes with 2 kills. the Eagles enjoyed their opening week of competition and look forward to improving both their skills and their record.

The Lady Eagles are 1-1 after the opening week of the season. They are coached by Lou Ann Ellenburg who teaches 7th grade math.
