In the second quarter of Friday night’s game against Wren, tight end Trevlin Franklin came into the game as quarterback, replacing two-year starter Zach Lappin.
Neither Lappin nor Franklin were able to put points on the board for the Green Wave, who lost to the Hurricanes 35-0 in a rain-shortened game.
Wren’s Austin McCaskill threw for three touchdown passes and 233 yards, despite the fact that the Hurricanes did not play an offensive down in the third quarter before the game was delayed due to lightning.
Rain set in during the delay, and an hour later, coaches Jabo Burgess and Jeff Tate agreed to call the game in order to avoid the risk of injury to any of the players.
Wren’s first touchdown came on a 17-yard pass from McCaskill to Elliott Caldwell. Ben Harmon kicked the extra point to give the Hurricanes a 7-0 lead.
Later in the quarter, Levi Bufford a touchdown on a 1-yard run to increase Wren’s lead to 14-0.
McCaskill connected with Caldwell again in the second quarter for a 8-yard touchdown pass, giving the Hurricanes a 21-0 lead.
Bufford then scored his second touchdown of the night, this time on a 6-yard run that gave Wren a 28-0 lead.
McCaskill connected with Chris Perdomo with a 45-yard pass with 3:40 remaining in the first half, giving Wren a 35-0 halftime lead.
Easley began a drive in the third quarter, but when lightning was spotted, the referees delayed the game. Fans were advised to seek shelter.
By S.C. High School League rules, once a game is called due to lightning, it cannot be restarted until 30 minutes after the last flash of lightning is seen.
One hour later, with a torrid downpour falling on Brice Field, officials called the game, making 35-0 the final score.
Easley hosts powerful Mauldin Friday night in the annual Homecoming game. Wren has a bye week before beginning region play Oct. 9 by hosting Laurens.
