EASLEY — It’s been a while since Easley has defeated Westside on the football field.

How long has it been?

The last Green Wave coach to win against Westside was Larry Bagwell. That’s right, as in current-mayor-of-Easley and retired-after-the-1991-season Larry Bagwell.

And Bagwell’s win wasn’t even in his final season as Green Wave coach.

Bagwell’s 1987 team defeated Westside 14-8. The Rams dropped down to the AAA division in 1988, and did not return to Easley’s schedule until 1992, the first year after Bagwell retired.

Westside first played Easley in 1972, the year that Stanley Morgan and Mike Barnes helped Bagwell lead the Green Wave to the state AAAA championship.

Bagwell retired with a 10-2 record against the Rams.

In 1992, Westside defeated Easley 22-14. The Rams have won 16 straight now in the series, the longest losing streak Easley has ever had against a single opponent.

So Friday night Jabo Burgess has the opportunity to become the first Easley High School football coach whose name isn’t “Bagwell” to earn a win over Westside.

It is a possibility. After all, Westside was 0-8 going into last week’s game against Laurens, which the Rams won by 10 points.

The Green Wave could also notch their first win at Brice Field since defeating Pickens in the opening game of the 2007 season.

In addition to being the final home game of the season, tonight’s contest has been declared the Hall of Fame game, with Jack Moore, Dan Nunnery, Todd Schonhar, Jennifer Robinson and the late Luther Washington will be honored for their athletic accomplishments at the school.
