CLEMSON—Gov. Mark Sanford officially suspended Elouise James from her position as a member of the Clemson City Council Friday.

James was indicted by the Pickens County Grand Jury Oct. 20 for exploitation of a vulnerable adult, forgery and obstruction of justice.

Sanford’s executive order noted that all of the charges involve moral turpitude, and by state law, anyone who is an officer of a political subdivision of the state and who has been indicted by a grand jury for crimes that involve moral turpitude may be suspended by the governor. The suspension lasts until James is either acquitted or found guilty of the charged offenses.

Sanford’s executive order states that his action in no way or manner addresses the question of the guilt or innocence of James.

The action takes effect immediately.
