CENTRAL—DeAndre Hopkins, Daniel’s “do-everything” player, is the only Pickens County football star selected to be on the South Carolina Shrine Bowl team.

Hopkins will be a wide receiver for the Sandlappers team. Hopkins has proven to be a threat both as a runner and a receiver, and has even a few passes this season.

He has led the Lions to a 10-0 regular season record and their second straight Western AAA title. Daniel opens the state AAA playoff this Friday, hosting former Western AAA foe Berea. If the Lions win, they will host the winner of Friday’s Greer-Chester game in the second round of the playoffs.

Chester defeated Daniel in last year’s Upstate Championship game. It was the Lions’ only loss of that season.

Matthew Ashley, lineman for Belton-Honea Path was the only other Western AAA player selected for the Shrine team.

Wide receiver Matavio Bryant of Hanna, defensive lineman Kelcy Quarles of Greenwood, and kicker Ruben Perez of Laurens were the only three players from Region 1-AAAA selected to play in the Shrine Bowl.

The 73rd annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas will be played 1 p.m., Dec. 19, at Gibbs Statdium on the campus of Wofford College in Spartanburg.
