Easley hung in the game with Westside, trailing just 14-9 in the fourth quarter. But two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns spelled doomed for the Green Wave, who fell to the Rams 29-9.
Easley falls to 1-9 and 0-4 in Region 1-AAAA play. The Green Wave will take on Region 1-AAAA champions Wren on the road Friday night in the season finale for Easley. Westside improved to 2-8 and 2-2 in Region 1-AAAA play. The Rams will host cross-town rival Hanna Friday night in what will likely be the season finale for both teams.
Westside shut down the Green Wave running game, holding Easley to -11 yards rushing.
Westside looked strong early, scoring in the first minute and a half of the game. Rams quarterback Brendon McCann completed a pass to Fred Mattison for 56 yards for a touchdown, giving Westside a 7-0 lead.
Later in the first quarter, Easley’s Brandaun Addison intercepted an Westside pass to give Easley the ball on the Westside 49-yard line.
Quarterback Andrew Gilstrap completed passes to Nick Saccogna, John Menchyk and Trevin Franklin to move the ball to the Westside 2.
A quarterback sack move the ball back to the Westside 10. The Rams then pushed Easlye back three more yards on the next play, but penalized for a face mask offense, moving the ball to the Westside 8 yard line.
Gilstrap then hit Menchyk for an 8-yard touchdown pass. The extra point attempt failed, leaving Easley trailing 7-6.
Westside added to its lead in the second quarter with a nine-yard touchdown pass from McCann to Matthew Levine.
Just before halftime, Easley’s Michael English recovered a Westside fumble at the Rams’ 33-yard line. Two plays later, Devon Sutherland kicked a 43-yard field goal to cut the Rams’ lead to 14-9 as time expired for the first half.
Easley’s defense did not allow another point in the game. But early in the fourth quarter, Rocky Jones intercepted an Easley pass and returned it for a touchdown. The two-point conversion gave Westside a 22-9 lead.
Later in the quarter, Chad Jones intercepted an Easley pass and returned it 36 yards for another Westside touchdown. The extra point gave the Rams a 29-9 lead.
Easley’s final attempt to score ended when Westside’s Tay Jackson intercepted an Easley pass at the goal line, and returned it to the Westside 5-yard line. The Rams ran the remaining time off the clock and collected their second win of the season.
The Rams have now won the last 18 games in the series.
