Easley Progress readers who participated in last week’s online poll are sending a strong message to our national leaders: Let’s concentrate on bringing our troops home.

Almost half — 48 percent — of those responding said the United States should work to bring soldiers home in 2010. One third — 33 percent — feel our top military priority should be Afghanistan. Only 19 percent feel Iran should be the top U.S. military priority.

One voter felt that there is little left to accomplish. “If we think we can stay over there long enough to ensure peace all around the world, we are being naive. There is no use risking our soldiers’ lives when there is little left to accomplish.”

Another felt our current commitments limit our abilities to react to future emergencies. “We’ve won wars in Afghanistan and Iran for the most part, and set examples for others who want to challenge freedom. But we cannot keep fighting the same war over and over and without limiting our ability to defend ourselves.”

Another reader felt the best way to combat future terrorist action is by concentrating on Afghanistan.

“Afghanistan is apparently the home to the most terrorist training and hiding. If was can attach terrorism at its roots, then maybe tragedies such as the bombs of Sept. 11, 2001, will never happen again on U.S. soil.

Another reader said Iran should be our country’s military focus.

“We have a commitment to Israel, and we have a need for oil. With Iran’s actions of late, it is important we have a strong influence in Iraq. If we abandon Iraq now, some other group of terrorist will gain control, and we’ll be right back where we started.”

One reader, who apparently did not vote, sent it this comment: “It’s Christmas, time to pray for peace on earth. Let’s pray for a time when we need no military focus.”
