Fundamental rights are under attack

Editor, The Progress:

‘My Country ‘TIS of THEE...’ We just might be singing ‘My Country WAS of THEE...’ sooner, rather than later, if we continue to allow God to be erased from every aspect of our lives. Our government, birthed on the principle ... IN GOD WE TRUST is slowly losing that principle of trust in God.

Americans now find themselves serving the god of Political Correctness and environmentalist hacks.

Our fundamental rights of Life, Liberty and pursuit of Happiness, guaranteed us by our Constitution, are under attack. They are called greedy Rights. Rights that are offensive to the disadvantaged ... the non-achievers should be altered.

The PC gang invaded the school room, found our text books politically incorrect and revised them. Fantasy took over Fact; accuracy, set aside in lieu of diversity. Our heroic forefathers became perverts and/or incompetents. Science became junk as God’s domain was invaded and global warming became the venue by which liberals could fleece us blind.

Nanny PC looked at our traditions, frowned and took action. We were blind-sided, took a sucker punch, and did nothing. ‘Christmas holiday’ became ‘Winter break’... lest we offend those who did not celebrate Christ’s birth.

‘Easter break’ became ‘Spring break’ ... lest we offend those who did not believe in the Resurrection. Merchants succumbed to the pressure of diversity. Happy Holidays; Season’s Greetings, Joyful holidays... euphemisms used to replace the word ‘Christmas,’ our most memorable and traditional day of the year. This year’s Christmas tree at the White House will be called the Holiday Tree; no religious ornaments, please... a directive sent from the White House.

The climate summit will not recognize the religious significance of the season. We are not to consider ourselves a Christian nation according to the one who sometimes sits in the oval office.

How often do we ponder ... ask, ‘What can I do to stop the erosion of our freedom. We are set up as a Republic ... the government to work for ‘We the people.’

The congressmen we send to Washington are to speak on our behalf. If we fail to let them know our wishes re an issue, we cannot blame them for doing what is expedient for them? With phones, E-mails, faxes, we can bombard Congressmen with our directives. Right now let them know we’re against this health care bill. It is a vehicle for power the left pants after. We will pay dearly in taxes, limited health care, resulting in helpless depression.

The ballot is our bullet. Let us use it. We invoke help from our spiritual leaders. We pray for boldness in the pulpit to pray for America, and to remember daily, our neglected soldiers who stand in an ever widening gap. Leaderless! God bless them; especially those away from loved ones at Christmas. Merry Christmas: a Happy New Year to all. God bless America.

I'm just going to ask some questions that came to mind as I read this letter, questions that I wish I could ask the writer. If she reads this, I'd love to hear her thoughts in response:

"Americans now find themselves serving the god of Political Correctness and environmentalist hacks."

This to me is so vague-- how exactly do we find ourselves serving these "hacks"? Can you give me an example, one that is not people of a different point of view than yourself simply exercising their American freedom to act on their beliefs?

"Rights that are offensive to the disadvantaged ... the non-achievers should be altered."

I honestly have no idea what this means. Could you please explain? Disadvantaged? Non-achievers at what goal? Altered how? By whom?

"The PC gang invaded the school room, found our text books politically incorrect and revised them. Fantasy took over Fact; accuracy, set aside in lieu of diversity. Our heroic forefathers became perverts and/or incompetents. Science became junk as God’s domain was invaded and global warming became the venue by which liberals could fleece us blind."

I actually live outside of S.C., in a "liberal" state, and am a teacher. The last time I checked, in our history classes, George Washington, Jefferson, Adams, et al. are all still great men who laid down the principles that we still cherish today. Can you cite specific cases or examples where schools are teaching what you claim? Also, science, by definition, is distinct and separate from religion. Religion, as it concerns the existence of God, can't be proven or disproven, and thus is a matter of faith. I celebrate your right to have faith in the God of your choosing, but your statement is a contradiction-- just because YOU believe in God, does not make it a scientific fact-- and no true science teacher, no matter how religious they may be, should teach what is a matter of faith as if it were a scientific fact. And despite what happened in East Anglia, there is still an enormous body of evidence, compiled by people much smarter than you or I concerning climate change, supporting the idea of Global Warming. Personally, in a matter of science, I tend to trust scientists over politicians protecting moneyed interests. And for the record, the recent snowfall in the South, although not directly related to climate change, supports rather than contradicts the theory, if you actually take the time to study it.

"‘Christmas holiday’ became ‘Winter break’... lest we offend those who did not celebrate Christ’s birth."

The First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof"

The principle of separation of church and state to me means that those students in the public school where I teach who are Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, or none of the above (and these are actual students I'm speaking of) should not be compelled to observe holidays that are not a part of their religious tradition. Private, Christian schools are more than welcome to observe the 'Christmas' holiday. Why is it so wrong to acknowledge that there are other ways of viewing the world, and that in the public sphere no one religious belief should be made official? Calling it 'Holiday Break' to me shows respect to what are the deeply held religious beliefs of others.

"Merchants succumbed to the pressure of diversity."

I thought private businesses were supposed to be able to operate as they wish, without outside interference. Isn't that what conservatives want? If a merchant chooses to change 'Christmas' to "Happy Holidays", then isn't that their right? You are free to support or boycott their business as you wish. I assume that you are simply lamenting the general state of things, and not advocating that businesses be forced to revert to 'Christmas'-- but then what's your point? What do you suggest to change this?

"How often do we ponder ... ask, ‘What can I do to stop the erosion of our freedom."

Exactly what freedoms that you enjoyed on Dec. 31st, 2008, have been taken away since Obama took office? Specifically, what freedoms are being eroded? I have been hearing this refrain over and over the past few months, but never with any explanations.

"Right now let them know we’re against this health care bill. It is a vehicle for power the left pants after."

I'm not going to argue for or against the health bill, nor defend Democrats. I just implore you to spend an equal amount of time scrutinizing the intentions and actions of Republicans. To me, neither party has a corner on truth and sincerity.

Again, this is not an attack on your or anyone else's religious beliefs, just a request for dialogue and explanations beyond the charges being constantly leveled at the current administration that never seem to go deeper than the vague and generalized statements characterized here.

Thank you.

Thank God we still have a place to express our feelings and connect with like minded people like Katie did in her letter to the editor. Our press is still a linchpin in maintaining our God given freedoms. Support our newspapers by buying a subscription as I did yesterday to the Easley Progress and Merry Christmas!
