• The front page had a feature reprinted from the Spartanburg Herald about the rise of Olin Johnston from “farmer boy to the Govenor’s chair in brief political career.” Johnston was born in Honea Path.

• Easley began preparations for the city elections.Wayne C. Johnson and Sam T. Smith each announced plans to run for mayor.

• W. M. Hagood resigned as the Easley Water and Light Commissioner due to health reasons.

• Shadyside Florist in Easley opend a second location in Seneca.

• Cleo Roper of Six Mile was named captain of the Furman College football team.

• Weddings announced were:

— Minnie Ruth Black to James Edward Garrick; and

— Ester Evans to Claude Luther Morgan.

• Jean McTear Wichman was engaged to James Cely Garrison.

• Obituaries were printed for Susan McDaniel Foster, Lillie Nation Sanders, James Leary Ellenburg and Hattie E. Valwrath.

• Organizers of the Pickens County YMCA discussed the possibility of a swimming pool at its new Easley facility.

• Births included Pamela Jean Smith, Helen Marie Ramey, Debra Ka Kilby, Judith Lynn Hayes, Franklin Lee Pelfrey, Michael Isreal Alexander and Randy Perry Bigham.

• Dub Fortner was chosen “Young Man of the Year” by the Easley Jaycees.

• Gart Young, recently elected as an Easley city councilman, was sidelined by a stroke.

• A professional wrestling card was set for the Easley Armory featuring “Gorgeous” — The Perfumed Hollywood Orchard” against “Nature Boy” Bobby Rogers.

• Patsy Ruth Crenshaw was engaged to James Smith

• Obituaries were printed for Dr. C.C. Thrasher, Clarence Furman Nix, James P. Williams, George Edward Holder, Calvin Roark Staancell, Nany Elizabeth Stone Cowan, Tom R. Lovell and Olivia Jarrett Masters.

• Obituaries were printed for Harry Ansel Gibson, Steve Brewer, Ester Garrett Fortner, George Samuel Roberson, James Clinton “Jake” Jackson, Dorothy Keith Galloway Hudson, Ralph L. Green, Pearl Ann Owen Baity, Robert C. Baker, Rev. Horace J.C. Lindler, Victor Louie Crowder Sr. Henry Hiott Hammett, Jerry Wayne Stewart, Samuel Garfield Silvers, William S. Abrams and Grace Bell Snipes Crooks.

• Kelli Garrett of the Easley High School girls basketball team topped the 1,000 point scoring mark for her career.

• Bill Williams was names the sports editor for The Easley Progress.

• Henry Dagan McMaster, the first U.S. Attorney appointed by Pres. Ronald Reagan, spoke to the Easley Rotary.

• Engagements announced included:

— Tracy Lynn Duncan to Brian Lamar Whitlock;

— Janet Lyn Schmidt to John Charles Jameson;

— Tammy Louise Johnson to Scott Batson; and

— Darla Jo Brooks to Allen Ramey.

• Birthdays announced included Jonathan Dorsie Martin 3, Heather Ann Boone 3, Natasha LeAnn Bagwell 1 and Crystal Deanna Goodine 3.

Celebrating 50th wedding anniversaries were Mr. and Mrs. Delmar Martin, Mr. and Mrs. James L. Smith and Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Browning.
