But, unlike last in Tuesday’s win over Hillcrest, Easley was unable to hold on, as Gaffney defeated the Green Wave 74-66 in the AAAA Upstate championship game.
Easley had trailed the entire game, with Gaffney beginning the contest by scoring the first five points. The Green Wave fell behind by 14 points at one point in the first half and was behind by 11 in third quarter.
The Green Wave’s comeback began late in the third quarter, as Easley cut the Indians’ lead to 3. Easley was able to tie the game 54-54 off Troy McGowan’s three-point shot with just over five and half minutes remaining.
But the Indians recovered from the rally and scored 10 unanswered points to regain control of the game.
Sophomore Spencer Collins led the Green Wave with 28 points. Joel Cook scored 18 and Troy McGowens added 12.
Easley finishes the 2009-10 season with a 23-5 record.
Gaffney, led by former Gettys Middle School coach Mark Huff, returns to the state championship game the second year to face Lexington next Friday at the Colonial Center in Columbia. Lexington defeated Goose Creek Friday night to win the Lowcountry AAAA championship.
