EASLEY—Bodies flew across the ring Saturday night as Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling had its annual fundraising card at Easley High School.

The event was a fundraiser for the Easley High School Athletic Booster Club and the Easley city police department.

The special attraction was an appearance by retired wrestler Lex Lugar. Lugar has faced severe health problems in the past several years, including a partial stroke that left him unable to walk for a while. He now walks with the help of a cane.

Although Lugar did not address the crowd from the ring, he calmly signed autographs and posed for photos with fans before the beginning of the card and during the intermission. Lugar sat with a Bible in front of him, and gave each fan a pamphlet entitled, “God’s Simple Plan of Salvation.” The pamphlet identifies Lugar as the “Executive Director of Fitness and Nutrition” for Christian Living Magazine in Alpharetta, Ga.

In the main event, the National Wrestling Alliance World Tag Team Champions, the Rock-n-Roll Express (Robert Gibson and Ricky Morton) defeated the team of N.W.A. Heavyweight Champion “Buff” Bagwell and N.W.A. Junior Heavyweight Champion Ricky Nelson. After the match ended by pinfall, Nelson and Bagwell attacked Morton and Gibson from behind. Leaving the Rock-n-Roll Express lying helpless in the ring, Bagwell and Nelson picked up the World Tag Team belts and carried them to the locker room.

Once Morton recovered in the ring, he grabbed the microphone from ring announcer Rick Guest and addressed the crowd. Morton thanked everyone for coming out, and said that the fans were why he and Gibson kept going after many years of wrestling together. He invited the fans to come to a card May 1 at McCants Middle School in Anderson to watch the Rock-n-Roll Express gain revenge on Nelson and Bagwell.

“We’re going to bring back a little of the 80s” Morton said.

In other matches:

• Andru Bane defeated the Russian Assassin with a clothesline off the top rope.

• N.W. A. World Ladies Champion Kristin Atara defeated Jayme Jameson with a neckbreaker.

• “Beautiful” Bobby Eaton defeated Donnie Dollars with a reverse DDT.

• N.W.A. Hardcore Champion “High-Flying” Chris Hamrich defeated Jeff Lewis with help from outside interference from “Maffew” of 93.3 The Planet’s “The Rise Guys.”

Of course it's news. The event was held to raise funds for the police and the athletic booster club. Wrestling may not be everybody's cup of tea, but there's a lot of people out there who do like it and appreciate the coverage.
