Honor Flight is a national organization dedicated to flying World War II veterans to Washington so they can personally see the memorial dedicated to their service to their country.
The Veterans will depart Greenville Spartanburg Airport at approximately 9 a.m. and will return back at approximately 7:30 p.m..
Presently there are 142 WWII veterans on a waiting list to make the trip. Each flight can carry about 90 veterans.
Honor Flight is sponsored by American Legion posts in the county and the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office.
“This is truly a community project that has been supported by the entire community to let these WWII veterans know how much we appreciate their sacrifice and service many years ago” said Sheriff David Stone. “They literally saved the world. This is a small way to thank them for what they did for our country.”
The group plans to have a patriotic celebration at the airport upon the veterans’ return home.
“We encourage as many folks as possible to be at GSP around 7:30 p.m. to give these outstanding veterans a hero’s homecoming,” Stone said “This is one of the main highlights of the trip to have so many people turn out at the airport.”
While Honor Flight has funds on hand for this trip, the organization is still raising money to pay for the group’s next trip for those remaining on the waiting list.
Anyone interested in sponsoring a veteran, or who would like to receive additional information or to to schedule a presentation for a group, please contact the Sheriff’s Office at 898-5534.
