The YAMs will perform between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
The YAM program was offered at Holly Springs Elementary during the 2007-2008 school year. Betty McDaniel, a teacher and librarian at Holly Springs researched the program along with Dan and Norma Hendricks. They worked together and were able to make the program available for not only Holly Springs Elementary students, but also for students around Pickens.
YAM is an afterschool program for third through eighth grade students that uses local musicians as instructors. The students learn the art of playing music by ear.
YAM was then introduced to Pickens Middle School students in the 2008-2009 school year and to other schools in the area during the 2009-2010 school year.
The students learn to play fiddles, guitars, banjos and mandolins. They play in jam sessions each Friday night at the Oolenoy Community Building located at 5301 Dacusville Hwy. in Pickens. The jam sessions help to raise donations to pay rent and support the YAMs program.
