• Ellison McKissick Jr. was named president of the American Textile Manufacturers Institute.

• Four members of the U.S. House of Representatives toured two Alice Manufacturing plants to gain first-hand knowledge about the textile industry.

• Easley officials found our that a $90,000 grant for downtown revitalization could only be used for loans.

• A judge dismissed two lawsuits against Easley Combined Utilities, clearing the way for a new sewage treatment facility.

• The Pickens County United way exceeded its annual fundraising goal by $24,000.

• Obituaries were printed for Jessie Miller Cassell, Jessie Robinson, Lois Evelyn Roper Maddox, J. Hovey Burgess, Fred Coleman, J. B. Hughes, Geneva Reynolds Stamey Gibson, Judith Loriaine Merritt Netchaef, Fay Dixon, Glen Harold Collins, Maime Lucille Hunter, Dora Rambo Davis, Bennie McGee Jr., Thomas Whitfield Whittle, Celia Chappell Hamilton, Rudy Alexander Hayne, Gary Albert Alexander and Thomas Michael McClanahan.

• Most Easley churches combined for an Easter sunrise service at Brice Field of Easley High School.

• Joy Wilson and Maxine Hunter signed up to be Miss Easley contestants.

• Teresa Mauldin Thomas, 90, one of the two remaining widows of Confederate war veterans in Pickens County, died.

• Candidates for Miss Pickens were Carolyn Nealy, Jackie Gravely, Linda Turner, Doris Keith, Mildred Alexander and Betty Porter.

• Recent births included for Douglas Porter, Rickey Leon Speed, Tamara Lynne Whitlock, Joe Bryson Mason, Russell Joseph Kirk, Tammie Jill Winslett, Starla McCullum, Sherry Lynn Thompson, Tracy Dell Ellenburg, Taleena Marie Patterson and Catherine Joe Murphree.

• Engagement announcements were printed for:

— Ora sue Alberton to Carl Erwin Whitman; and

— Linda Ann Black to Henry Floyd Price.

Thursday, April 18, 1935

• The Easley High School debate team had a public meeting to discuss whether the state of South Carolina should begin collecting a sales tax.

• In his first city council meeting as mayor, Wayne Johnson suggested that funds collected from selling lots in the city cemetery be used to pay for upkeep and maintenance of the cemetery.

• The Shirley Temple movie “The Little Colonel” was set to play at the Lyric Theatre on April 23, which was Temple’s sixth birthday.

• An obituary was printed for Mary Hinton.
