But there was a time when that section of Pendleton Street had a more colorful nickname.
“I’m told that this used to be known as ‘Sardine Alley,’” said William Robinson, the Easley attorney who serves on the city’s TIF committee.
According to legend, sometime during World War I, a sardine truck wrecked and spilled its cargo all across the road. The smell lingered for quiet some time, so people began calling that area “Sardine Alley.”
Robinson reported that at that time, the downtown district ended at what is now the intersection of First Street and Pendleton Street.
“Beyond that was residential,” Robinson said.
Thanks to the efforts of the TIF district, what was at one time a smelly embarrassment is now a pleasant, beautiful park.
