Wednesday, April 24, 1985

• Village Park Hardware was building a new store off S.C. 123.

• The Pickens County Library Board voted to become more aggressive with overdue books. Registered letters were sent to violators, threatening a $100 fine or 30 days imprisonment.

• Pickens city police officers wrote tickets for cars who were using private parking property and parking lots to drive through while “cruising.”

• Obituaries were printed for the Rev. Ernest Sorrells, Marie Henderson Foster, Jane Mauldin Aiken, Mary Lee Merritt Garrett, James Harold Tumlin, Bruce DeWitt Smith, Sara “Bizzie” Elizabeth Page Ormond, Clarence Franklin Whitlock, the Rev. John P. Gamble, Nevin R. Austin, Ann Mae Morton Miller, Luther Hill McCall and Onie Harrison Freeman.

• The city of Pickens held its first “Pickens Festival.”

• The Powdersville Fire Department purchased a new 1,200 gallon tanker.

• Births announcements were printed for coleman Patrick Brown, David Adam Boyce, Thomas Harold Tripp, Nicole Erin Nicols, Ashley Denise Bishop, William Clayton Constance and George William Topper III.

• The Easley Progress named Bobby Joe Skelton of Daniel the boys basketball coach of the year and Dennis Patterson of Liberty the girls basketball coach of the year. Danny Merck of Liberty was the boys basketball player of the year, while Kelli Garrett of Easley was the girls player of the year.

• Wedding announcements were printed for:

— Eunice Ann Moore to James Heyward Byers;

— Beverly Antoinette Crawford to Tony Lee Coleman; and

— Lisa Carol Green to Dennis James Boiter.

• Engagement announcements were printed for:

— Betty Ann Cooper to Albert Reid Black Jr.

— Kelly Parton to Gary Michael Bolding;

— Sarah Patrica Roper to Michael Yates Hudson; and

— Susan Michele Cartee to Lance Alworth Morris.

• The Rev and Mrs. Thomas William Searcy celebrated their 40th anniversary.

• The Easley High School senior class was treated to a tour of Allice Manufacturing facilities.

• Walter H. Ragsdale rejoined the staff of the Easley Progress after serving a stint in the U.S. Navy.

• Maxine Hunter was crowned Miss Easley 1960. Lola Lance was the first runner-up.

• Recent births included Teressa Ann Mauldin, Debra Marie Lovinggood, Heidi Jean Steverwald, Darryl Roy Burgess, Jane Elizabeth Chellis, Kathy Charlene Talley, Boddy Dale Clardy and Deborah Lynn McCall.

• Obituaries were printed for Hammond Lea Meyers, Waymon Master, Hal G. Waldrop, Enoch Guinn Pepper, Ammon S. Ladd, Lra Duram Crane, Jesse Willard Smith, Charlie Kelly, and Mamie Young Gary.

• Pricilla Jo Hunter was engaged to Henry Grady Lollis.

• Wedding announcements were printed for:

— Susanne McPherron to William Robert Davis; and

— Wanda Faye Ellneburg to Alton McCuen.

Thursday, April 25, 1935

• O.S. Stewart, the former Pickens County Clerk of Court, was elected mayor of city of Pickens.

• Sen. Smith pushed a bill calling for the construction of a national Andrew Pickens Monument, to be built in Oconee County.

• Former Easley Progress owner C.T. Martin criticized a new state law that said that school trustees should be appointed instead of elected.

• U. S. Rep. John C. Taylor was pushing for a new post office building for Easley.

• The play, “The Old Maid’s Club was being presented at Dacusville High School.

• Nine Forks Baptist Church in Dacusville held a dedication service. Dr. B.E. Greer, president of Furman University was the guest speaker. That afternoon marked the church’s 59th anniversary. Members celebrated with a homecoming dinner. Several former pastors attended and spoke.

• Obituaries were printed for Thomas Henry Townsend, Phelps Sasson, William P. Reynolds and Martha Ellie Lollis.

• Gennette Campbell wed Loyce Waldrop.
