Westmoreland was heavily involved with youth sports. His dedication did not end with his own children’s involvement in the city’s youth league programs. Hundreds of children who participated in the Easley city recreation programs share memories of receiving encouragement from Westmoreland.
Westmoreland would not have wanted a parade, a statue of himself or any tribute that gave him any glory. He was always the type who credited others for the success of projects he worked on, humbly stepping aside when the spotlight shined.
The new picnic area has several tables and trees. Westmoreland would have been proud to have been a part of providing a place where families could share a fun afternoon together in a safe environment.
He would be even more proud if we would take a page from his book. Whenever we use the facilities dedicated to Steve Westmoreland, perhaps we should pause to consider how we could be a positive influence on others; how we could help those in need; how we could show love for our friends, family and the community at large.
