“Godspell Junior” will be presented 6 p.m. Saturday and 6 p.m. Sunday at the church. Admission is free.
“Our kids have worked very hard on this,” said Owen Robertson, minister of education for Easley First Baptist Church. “They are going to take this on a mission trip this summer. It should be a very special experience.”
“Godspell,” actually an archaic spelling of “gospel,” first hit off Broadway in 1971, in the wake of the success of “Jesus Christ, Superstar.”
The play was made into a movie in 1973. “Godspell” finally made it to Broadway in 1976, and has had numerous revivals at various theaters ever since.
The play is based mostly on the Gospel According to Matthew, although some of the parables recreated were exclusively in the book of Luke.
“Day by Day,” by the original cast, was a hit from the Godspell soundtrack, reaching No. 13 on the Billboard Charts in 1972. The song remains a standard today on Adult Contemporary radio.
Easley First Baptist minister of music Rick Baumgarner has worked with the cast on the play.
“What a wonderful way for these young people to share the good news of Jesus Christ with Easley,” Baumgarner said. “What a wonderful way for the people of Easley to see the story of salvation presented in a unique manner.”
