Christopher Patrick Daniels, 41, escaped the landfill around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, according to police. He was being housed at the Pickens County Detention Center and was on a work assignment when confirmed missing, according to the state Department of Corrections.
Daniels was serving a 15-year sentence after being convicted in 2009 of third-degree arson for the March 8, 2009 fire at the Belton church that he pastored. He was also convicted of breach of trust, filing a false police report, three counts of false claims to an insurance company and five counts of forgery.
South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia authorities are on the lookout for Daniels who is described as a white male, 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighing around 230 pounds. He has brown hair and hazel eyes, said Josh Gelinas, communications director for the state Department of Corrections.
According to Lynn Fisher, Pickens County emergency management director, the escape happened while a landfill employee was using the restroom.
