Easley, Wren fall in AAAA baseball playoffs

UPSTATE — Wren High School and Easley High School finished one-and-two in the Region 1-AAAA baseball race, but neither was able to advance past the district level of the state playoffs.

In AAAA baseball, four teams from each conference advance to the eight brackets of the district playoffs. Each of the four Upstate brackets had one team from each of the four AAAA conferences in the Upstate. Each group of four teams has a double elimination tournament.

In Easley’s bracket, District III, the Green Wave were the second seed and Northwestern was the first.

After defeating Mauldin in the first round of the district playoffs, Easley fell to Northwestern in the second round. The Green Wave fought its way back from the losers bracket to face Northwestern again last Wednesday for the district championship.

Easley defeated Northwestern 11-4 in the first game, forcing a winner-take-all second game that night. The Green Wave fell one run short in the rematch, 3-2.

Wren was the top seed in its bracket, District One, and defeated Dorman 5-2 in the opening round. Blythewood High School upset second seed Gaffney in the first round, 6-4, the knocked off top seed Wren 4-1.

Wren defeated Gaffney to earn a rematch, but Blythewood was able to defeat the Hurricanes again Wednesday, becoming the only third-seed to advance to past the district championship round.

Northwestern, Blythewood, Byrnes and Rock Hill will begin a double-elimination tournament for the Upstate title Monday. White Knoll, Sumter, Wando and Summerville will compete for the Lower State title.
