Wednesday, May 22, 1985

• J. Cleo Roper and James C. Brice Sr. were inducted into the Paladins Club Hall of Fame at Furman University. Roper was a 1935 graduate of Furman who played football, basketball, track and baseball for the Paladins. He was captain of the basketball team and alternative captain of the football team. He led the basketball team in scoring in 1934. Brice, a 1927 Furman graduate, helped the 1926 Furman team defeat the Citadel, the University of South Carolina and Clemson on consecutive weekends to give Furman the state championship. He came to Easley in 1929, where he coached the football team to its first state championship in 1937. The school’s football field is named after him.

• Combined Utilities officials warned that if lawsuits caused the federally mandated building of the Middlebranch Sewage Treatment Plant to be delayed past September, it could cost Combined Utilities customers $700 annually.

• Robin Fletcher, an Easley High School senior, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from First National Bank of Pickens County.

• The Easley Community Theater was presenting “Oklahoma!”

• Easley’s population was 8,250 according to initial figures from the 1960 census.

• There were a total of 70 trailers being used as residences in Easley City Limits.

• Sandra Hunter became the first girl to ever be elected tas the Easley High School Study Body president.

• Stewart Bauknight was selected to play in the annual all-star football game in Columbia.

• Recent births included Hovie Randall Smith, Susan Lynne Montgomery, Jackie Dale Stancil, Clifton Hoyt Hendricks, Donald Keith Reeves, David Vincent Butts, Greg Foster Oliver, Carol Virginia Breazeale, Stewart Powell Walker, Wayne Kemper Talley, Earl Daniel Britzenhoff, and Dorsey Edward Greer Jr.

• Easley merchants attended a meeting to discuss forming an Easley business association.

• The Ford Motor Company announced it was increasing the minimum pay for a day’s work from $5 to $6.

• The Easley High School Class of 1935 was set to hold its Baccalaureate service.

• The Easley High School classes of 1905, 1910, 1915, 1920, 1925, and 1930 were set to have reunions May 30, the night of the commencement services for the EHS Class of 1935.

• Obituaries were printed for the Rev. A.S. Lesley, Luther E. Dean and Walter Lee Rampey.
