COLUMBIA – The Foothills Presbyterian Community in Easley was recently named the Outstanding 2009 Adopt-A-Highway Group of the Year for Pickens County.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) presented the award to Foothills during the annual awards ceremony on April 29 in Columbia. The event is hosted by SCDOT and recognizes the volunteer-citizen groups, coordinator and SCDOT employees for their participation in the Adopt-A-Highway program.

“We adopt a 2 mile stretch of Crestview Rd. every year which is close to Foothills,” Anne Tedder Activities Director of Foothills Presbyterian Community said. “Our residents have been doing this for at least 7 years. The residents are very environmentally conscious. They do their part to keep this area of the county beautiful.”

Tedder said this was the first time Foothills has won the award, and the residents were really excited about the honor.

She said the average age of the residents that help with the Adopt-A-Highway program is around 86 with the oldest member of the team being 90 years old.

“Our residents are very cheerful about this project and want to help,” Tedder said. “It’s very impressive to see senior adults taking their time and energy to help keep the community clean. We are proud to be able to do this every year, especially since the area is right outside of our community.”

Tedder also said the residents a very active in recycling throughout the year.

“It made us feel great to receive this award,” she said.
