United Way of Pickens County is participating in a nationwide Day of Action June 21, 2010.
Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. at the Rosewood Center and then will split up to work on a six projects benefitting local non-profits — including the Liberty Senior Center, Pickens County Meals on Wheels, the Clemson Outdoor Lab, Pickens County YMCA, Clemson Community Care and the SC Botanical Gardens.
Projects were selected from organizations that the United Way of Pickens County regularly works with, said Heather Love, community impact director with United Way of Pickens County.
“We contacted them to see if they had particular needs that they needed fulfilled,” she said. “Any kind of volunteer project that had kind of been on the backburner that they needed individuals to help out with.
“We’re always looking to engage volunteers,” Love continued. “A lot of times, we’ll hear about volunteer projects through one avenue or another and try to support those any we can.”
At the Liberty Senior Center, volunteers are needed to help garden, including weeding flower beds and trimming some small trees and bushes.
At Meals on Wheels, volunteers are needed to drive 3 routes that day. Officials said a short training session will be held before drivers deliver meals.
Volunteers are needed to help paint a kitchen at Clemson Community Care, and to help rebuild a wall at the YMCA’s Easley location.
At the Clemson Outdoor Lab, volunteers will help split wood.
Volunteers are needed to spread mulch at the Heirloom Garden and help clean display cases at the Bob Campbell Geology Museum.
Volunteers don’t need to bring anything, but may be contacted to see if they have pertinent equipment — garden supplies for the garden projects, for example.
“If they didn’t, it wouldn’t prevent them from volunteering on that particular project,” Love said. “It’s just another way of contributing if they have additional supplies.”
All volunteers will be given United Way T-shirts, and volunteers are asked to wear comfortable clothing.
To register for the Day of Action, call Nikki Dodd at 850-7094, ext. 100 or email her at intern@uwpickens.org.
When registering, let United Way officials know if you have a preference among the Day of Action volunteer opportunities.
This year marks the first year that Pickens County has participated in the Day of Action, Love said. “It’ll be in conjunction with other United Ways across the country that will be doing a volunteer service day on the same day,” she said.
Though the recession has presented the agencies with a number of options, United Way has been able to meet those challenges through a number of ways, Love said.
“I think we’re pretty fortunate,” she said. “We’ve worked really hard to raise as much money as we can in terms of local giving. I think we’re situated in a relatively good place, coming up on the end of our fiscal year.”
