The Easley Progress

Wednesday, June 22, 1960

• The front page of The Easley Progress featured an artist’s rendering of the new Easley First Methodist sanctuary, which was under construction at the time.

• P.O. “Jab” Wilson was honored for 24 years of service to the Easley Fire Department.

• Ground-breaking ceremonies were held for the new Flat Rock Baptist Church near Liberty.

• Wedding announcements were printed for:

— Dorcas Louise Hamby to Jimmy Junior Cheek;

— Laura Maddox Smith to William Benjamin Spearman;

­— Betty Stewart to Eddie Ellison;

— Sylvia Jean Harris to William Wayne Massingil; and

— Myra Elizabeth Robbins to David Singletary Dubose.

• Engagement announcements were printed for:

— Mary Helen Wood to Charles Edward Welborn; and

— Mozelle Cole to Jaco Earle Stokes.

• Mrs Ernest Mauldin retired from Glenwood Mills after working in textiles for 50 years.

• A feature on retiring Pickens County treasurer Jesse D. Gillespie revealed that he had been left for dead for five days on a World War I battlefield in Cantigney, France. His commanding officer was so sure of his death, Gillespie’s death certificate was issued. He gradually crawled toward a group of U.S. soldiers stationed 500 feet away. After five and a half days, he was within 30 feet of the soldiers. He found the energy to call out to them.

• Obituaries were printed for Newton Foster Knight, Ira Guthrie and Leonard Richard Fendley.

75 Years Ago

The Easley Progress

Thursday, June 27, 1935

• Liberty announced plans to unveil a memorial tablet erected by Dr. E.J. Bryan honoring the 60 Liberty natives who fought in World War I.

• The Easley Business League held its second meeting.

• Mrs. C.G. Giffin brought four potatoes to The Easley Progress office. The potatoes averaged four and one fourth pounds.

• The Progress announced a contest in which whoever brought the largest watermelon to the office would receive a free subscription.

• Obituaries were printed for W.A. G. Jameson and Zachariah Tay Boggs.

• The Sheriff of Wilson County, N.C., was arrested and charged with driving an automobile while drunk.
