• The city of Pickens annexed 16 acres into city limits. The land was being developed into the Town Creek Shopping Center.
• Ortec announced plans to move into a new $1 million 10-acre facility off SC 8 in Easley.
• Kim Tolbert was crowned Miss Fourth of July at the city’s annual festival pageant. Lisa Granger was the first runner up. Melanie Hendricks was second runner-up.
• Easley’s Joe Anders shared his memories of playing for the Greenville Spinners in the 1940s and his memories of “Shoeless” Joe Jackson.
• Easley’s Russell Patterson won the National Weight Lifting Championship for the 14-15 year-old age group.

• An article discussed the possibility of a 49th state. Prospects included Alaska, Hawaii, Texlahoma (parts of Texas and Oklahoma), Illana (Lake County Indiana and Cook County Illinois, with Chicago as the capital) and Absaroka (parts of Wyoming, Montana and South Dakota).
• Each Shell gasoline dealer in the county was set to receive a free ride in the company airplane at the Liberty airport.
• An obituary was printed for Addie F. Trotter.
• The birth of Nancy Louise Alexander was announced.
