The Baobab tree is known as the tree of life because of its importance to both human and animal inhabitants of the African Savannah regions. It provides shelter in its large tangled branches and roots. Its cork-like bark is fire resistant and is used for cloth and rope. You will learn more about the tree as the week goes on.
The leaves of the Baobab tree are used for condiments and medicines. Its fruit, called “monkey bread” is rich in vitamin C and provides food for residents of the area. Probably more importantly the tree is capable of storing hundreds of gallons of water which can be tapped in dry periods.
Some of the trees are more than 2,000 years old. For most of the year, the tree is leafless and looks like its roots are sticking up in the air. Native African people apply many superstitions to the powers of the tree. For example, anyone who picks a flower from the tree will be eaten by a lion. On the other hand, if you drink water in which the seeds have been soaked, you’d be safe from a crocodile attack.
All area children are invited to the VBS sessions; no need to be a member of St. Matthias. Come join us for a week of fun and games. It promises to be a real blast.
