Ashley Lehman, 21, and Ada Lehman, 2, died from “blunt force trauma,” according to Anderson County Deputy Coroner Don McCown.
A passenger in the car, Crystal Keaton, 18, of Easley, was injured and taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital. Officials say her injuries don’t appear to be life threatening.
The S.C. Highway Patrol is still investigating the wreck, but it appeared that Ashley Lehman tried to break or slow down when someone was pulling in front of her, which may have caused a 2004 Chevrolet Blazer behind them to rear end the 2004 Toyota Corolla she was driving, McCown said.
Grady Harmon, 53, of Gilbert, S.C., was the driver of the Chevrolet, according to S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Bill Rhyne.
The military truck, driven by 27-year-old Jonathan Browder of Pickens, then hit their vehicle, and the Toyota caught on fire, officials said.
The military truck was the first of a convoy of four or five trucks, and military personnel immediately jumped out of their vehicles to pull the passengers out of the Toyota, officials said.
Ashley Lehman and Ada Lehman had died already, but they were able to save Keaton, who had been riding in the front passenger seat, according to McCown.
Although it’s likely that the front air bags deployed, the car was damaged so badly that it was hard to tell for sure, he said.
