Moreover, he wanted to brag on the contribution of the Easley Touchdown Club and the Easley Athletic Boosters Club.
“We think our field house is one of the best in the state, and as long as I’m here, it will continue to be so, I can guarantee you that,” Smith said.
Smith admitted the field had fallen into ill repair previously.
“When I was interviewing for the job, (EHS athletic director) Coach (Chris) Carter and (EHS principal) Dr. (Dannny) Merck were taking me on a tour of the facilities,” Smith said. “While we were in the field house, a mouse ran across the room. I’ll admit, I was embarrassed. But I was also thankful that it happened with me, not when somebody from the outside was seeing our facilities.”
Smith said that the rodent problem stemmed from some grass seed that was stored in a closet in the field house. When they checked the closet, they found hundreds of rats and little seed remaining.
“Now I’m an old country boy, and I’ve been to my share of rat killings,” Smith said. “But I’ve got to admit, that kind of grossed me out.”
That problem is a thing of the past. Volunteers have completely cleaned and painted the facility, and made many other improvements at Brice Field.
“We want people to come to our field and know that we’re proud of our young men,” Smith said.
Smith also appreciated the volunteers’ efforts to line off the field and get the stadium ready for the season opener.
“I was talking on the phone to a friend of mine who coaches in North Carolina,” Smith said. “He said he had to get off the phone, because he had to line off the field for Friday’s game. I told him that’s already been taken care of here.”
Smith said that he appreciates the efforts of the Touchdown Club and the Easley Boosters Club for what they do for the players, but their help has made life a little easier for him.
“Because of the Mom’s Club and the Dad’s Club and all the things they do, I was able to spend an extra hour and a half with my kids last week, and that means the world to me,” Smith said.
