Winning and losing are certainly important to the members of the club, but giving young men positive experiences that they will carry with them throughout life is perhaps the highest goal of the members of the club.
So Smith decided to bring a player with him to the Booster Club luncheons that are held at Sho’s Cafe on home game Fridays so that the members could see the kind of quality young men the program produces.
His first choice for the honor was apparently pretty easy.
“When I first got this job, one of the first people to talk to me was this young man,” Smith said. “He wanted to know what he need to do to help Easley become a winner.”
Williams spoke briefly to the crowd, politely thanking them for their support of the Green Wave program and vowing to make them proud of their support through the team’s play during the season.
Smith reported that Williams was squatting 315 pound last year, but through hard work had already moved up to 435 pounds.
Smith said Williams also excels in the classroom, and encourages the younger players on the team.
“He is actually what we want all of our kids to be,” Smith said.
