It’s easy to get all wrapped up in how the Easley High School varsity football team is going to be. Sam Houston is entering his first season as the head coach of the Green Wave.

But this past week, Coach Houston and his coaching staff were in full force at their youth camp. They got to practice at the new high school field, too.

“Youth camp is big – it’s something we do every year,” Houston said. “I think we had 80 kids today (last Thursday), which is a lot more than we had in the past. We get them out here to run around a little bit, teach them the basics of football and coach ‘em up, and some of our guys helped coach these young players. It was great to see.”

Continued Houston, “Getting the guys here from the rec – let them see our facilities and let them see where they’ll play on Friday nights. A lot of those kids have experience playing and some of them none.”

Coach Houston was asked if any of his varsity players have really stood out in the weight room. He did not want to single out any players, but he was quick to mention one varsity player.

“Stone Turner is doing a heck of a job,” Houston said. “He plays the defensive line for us. He battled an injury all of last year and he didn’t come back until the playoff game – his first game back as a sophomore. he had a huge spring and he understands what it takes. He’s put on some good weight for us – he’ll be a junior and plays noseguard for us.”
