POWDERSVILLE — This small-town rivalry had a little bit of everything … and more.
The game-winning play even featured a bit of a backyard style of play. In the final seconds of the game, with the fans on their feet, Powdersville quarterback Keagan Reid rolled out to the right and was looking for an open receiver.
“I wasn’t supposed to be in that spot,” said Bennett Brooks, right after making the game-winning catch in the end zone of a 33-29 win over Wren. “I saw my quarterback (Keagan Reid) running and I said I have to roll with him, and that’s what I did. I was there for it, and the rest is history.”
Added Reid, who completed 15-of-22 passes for 188 yards, ”I’m happy we got a touchdown and were able to secure the win. It was really exciting.”
Brooks led the Patriot receivers with 6 catches on that night for 94 yards. Rounding out the PHS receivers were: Tavious Williams (2-43), Xavier Huggins (2-27), Riggs Savage (2-14), Desmond Hunter (2-6) and Jackson Henson (1-4).
Williams, a senior, also gained some tough yards and led the Patriots in rushing with 10 carries for 34 yards.
Powdersville now has a 6-5 edge in this small-town rivalry.
When Patriots coach Robert Mustar was asked if he drew the play up that way, he said, “Absolutely not. That last play – sometimes you have to have a little bit of luck on your side. It is a special time and we are going to celebrate this one until Sunday and then we are going to move on. We have a quality opponent next week.”
Powdersville will travel to play Pendleton on Friday night.
Not to be overlooked was PHS field goal kicker Ethan Piel. He had two field goals in the victory over Wren and he’s got five total field goals in the past two games.
“Nothing against our kickers in the past, but he has been money,” said Patriots Coach Mustar. “We’ve been having more problems with extra points than we have had with field goals. It is pretty crazy. I am super proud of him and his leg and the kids believing in him. He goes out there and it is like he’s got ice in his veins.”
Added Coach Mustar, “To win games, you have to be disciplined and I thought we did a fairly good job of that and we could have done a better job at that. We have to be a class act and got caught up in the moment. We will keep some guys after practice for that on Monday and that will get corrected.”
