EASLEY — Growing up, some of my favorite sports memories are from Little League Baseball. The big hits, the big wins and the countless memories.
Amanda Morris is in her first year as President of the Easley Little League and opening day was this past weekend on Saturday. She has six teams in the 6U League, five teams in the 8U League and four teams in the 10U League. The one disappointing part this year — at no fault of Morris or her committee — is that there is no 12U League.
At press time, 174 total kids have signed up to play.
“The numbers are about the same as last year, but we did lose a lot of teams — one to travel ball and then we did not have enough volunteers to do 12U this year,” said Morris. “We do intend to have a 14U and signups are available right now for that.
The signup for the 14U league will run until mid April.
Morris did want to talk about the importance of volunteerism in the Easley baseball committee.
“I would like to say volunteers are important and I think we see that the most, and this year we see the lack of the most this season as far as coaches,” Morris said. “The more kids who are coming into Easley, we would love to see them come through the program. Even if they eventually end up in travel ball, it is always a good place to start. For the young kids especially, it is important to get them in early and let them have fun.”
Morris said the one change this year is that the younger kids (8U) can play where they want to.
Mark the calendar
Morris said they will be having a “Diamond Day” on Saturday, May 10. The location of it, too, will probably be on the football fields at JB Red Owens Complex. It will be an inhouse tournament with probably single-elimination.
“It will be like a family event for the most part — eat pizza and get trophies,” Morris said. “It’ll be a big banquet day for everybody.”
