POWDERSVILE — The memories!
That’s what you have left when your playing days are done.
A couple weeks ago, the Powdersville High School Boys Class 3A State Champions were honored during the Patriots football game with rival Wren.
“We had a great run,” said PHS Coach Jeremy McCall, whose team finished 23-3 overall last season. “There were no egos and it was all about the team. A super fun team to coach and to be around. It was never about them. Just quality, quality kids.”
When asked if he’s got any pressure this year to repeat as state champs, McCall said, “No, you always want to win more, but certainly it was awesome and I know they want to do it again. I’m looking forward to it.”
The two captains from last year’s state championship team at PHS were Trevor Presig and Didier Pineda.
“I think my biggest memory was state, but also winning the preseason tournament – all those important milestones in our season,” said Presig, who is currently a freshman at Clemson University and studying Health Science. “This team with the chemistry we had going since day one and conditioning, we’ve all just been working together. Just selflessness working together on and off the field at school, in the classroom and on the field. Games, practices, conditioning … it was a great team.
“It (winning state) was a goal we had been working towards when we first joined the team and to do it for the first time in school history was something special.”
Pineda, meanwhile, made sure to make his way back from the University of South Carolina. He’s currently studying International Business at USC.
“It was something special, especially with all these boys and being able to do it with my best friends,” said the 18-year old Pineda. “We always talked about it our freshman year that we were going to win state our senior year and it all worked out.”
