The Clemson University football team fell to 1-3 on the season on Saturday after a disappointing 34-21 loss to Syracuse. It marked the first-ever win for the Orange at Death Valley.

The surprise of the game – and arguably the play of the game – was when Syracuse ran an off-side kick (and recovered the ball) after scoring a touchdown in the first half. That one play shocked everyone! Props to Syracuse coach Fran Brown for making that call.

The University of South Carolina, meanwhile, fell to host No. 23 ranked Missouri 29-20. Quarterback LaNorris Sellers was 18-of-28 for 302 yards and 2 touchdowns. USC falls to 2-2, while Missouri improved to 4-0.

High school football action: Easley’s football team lost a heartbreaking 14-13 decision at J.L. Mann. The Green Wave went for 2 points (and the win) – in the final seconds of the game – and fell short with a pass in the end zone from QB Jojo Coleman.

“We had a chance to go for two and put the game away on the road,” said EHS Coach Sam Houston, “But we came up a play short. I’m proud of how the guys fought. It was an ugly game. We had some drives stall offensively. We have to better as coaches in situational things, but I’m proud at how our guys got after it and the way they kept fighting.”

Coleman finished the game 22-of-39 for 205 yards and one touchdown. Matthew Hillstock was his favorite target for the Green Wave with 11 catches for 127 yards. Rounding out the EHS receivers were: Malachi Ramey (4-32), Cason Brewington (3-23) and Malachi Debnam (3-21).

“The offense just didn’t get it done,” said Hillstock, right after the loss. “It starts with me as one of the captains. I just think we have to do better and we’ll take this into next week against Woodmont.”

The Green Wave slip to 2-2 on the season.

The play of the game, arguably, was when EHS senior Cason Brewington (on defense) stripped the ball on defense and recovered the ball himself. Brewington finished the game with 4 solo and 5 assists. “It was a huge play and we needed the play,” said EHS coach Sam Houston. “I’m proud of how our D got after it. We’ll learn from it as players and coaches, and keep grinding. We are right there and close to where we need to be.”

Jakyric Jamison had a team-high 13 tackles for EHS (3 solos, 10 assists), Kobe Preston had 11 tackles (4 solos, 7 assists) and Kaden Cooper had 8 tackles (2 solos, 6 assists) for the Green Wave.

J.L. Mann improved to 1-3 on the season.

Other action: Powdersville lost a 53-46 shootout to Broome. PHS senior QB Keagan Reid threw for 455 yards on 25-of-45 accuracy to go with 5 touchdowns. He also led the team in rushing with 6 carries for 41 yards. Xavier Huggins had a team-high 200 yards receiving on 8 catches for the Patriots. Desmond Hunter added 6 catches for 98 yards.

T.L. Hanna edged Greenwood 22-21; Liberty steamrolled past Wahalla 70-42; Daniel got past Clinton 41-39 and Seneca defeated Travelers Rest 42-10.
