EASLEY — A soccer goalie is kind of like a point-guard in basketball or a quarterback in football.
They can quickly make a team sink or swim!
Easley High School’s Griffin Horn is in her fourth-straight year as a soccer goalie and has been a big boost for the Green Wave.
“Varsity, let’s get out onto the field,” said Griffin to her teammates, right before taking the field for warmups against Mauldin last week.
Griffin and the Easley girls soccer team went on to lose a tough 2-0 decision to Mauldin.
Griffin is in her fourth-straight year of starting at goalie for the Green Wave and she is a team captain.
“I just try to keep the team motivated and make sure we are all being positive, and there is no negative energy,” Griffin said. “So even if we are down like in our last game, we still keep each other motivated so we don’t get killed.”
Griffin has been named The Easley Progress Athlete of the Week. She currently has a 4.3 grade point average in the classroom.
All season long, the 5-foot-9 Griffin has been a constant as a defensive stopper for Easley.
“She (Griffin) brings control of the game and she keeps us in a lot of games with her serves,” said EHS coach Paul Horn. “Last Tuesday, we lost to Greenville 1-0 but she had 16 saves. So, she keeps us in a lot of games and she is very athletic.”
Down the road, Griffin is planning to continue her soccer career at a Division III school called Greensboro College.
“I’m super excited about it,” Griffin said, about her plans to play at Greensboro College. “It’s going to be fun. It’s a good environment and I’ll probably study something in business.”
