EASLEY — The American Legion Post 52 had a special guest last week at their monthly meeting: Gregg Powell.

“I coached Easley Legion baseball for 28 seasons,” said Powell, to a big round of applause. “The memories I have of Post 52 – I could talk for five hours with you folks.”

Unfortunately, the one Post 52 member who was not in attendance was Dan Frawley who is a huge supporter of Easley Legion baseball. Frawley, though, still left a message with everyone at the meeting that said, “Thanks to all who helped by working the ballgames at Alice Mill Park.”

Powell stood up at the podium and said his 1990 Easley legion baseball team had four pitchers from that team play minor league baseball. He said he’d love to see another state championship by Post 52, too.

Please keep in your prayers the current Sick Call list of Post 52: Critter Humphrey, Lonnie Saxon, Cecil Durham, Larry Holcombe, David Jeffery, Raymond Crapo, Steward Baylor, Phil Prevatte, Harold Whitlock, Jim Ruud and Jim Stewart.

Sick Call at Richard M. Campbell Veterans Home: Robert (Pat) Patterson and James McConnell.

Post Everlasting: Dr. Michael Straker.

Congrats, Mike: A well-earned honor featured Mike Church being named 3rd Vice Commander.

Easley High School: Post 52 member Kent Dykes said that EHS will be having a 9/11 ceremony on September 11. “The American Legion will be laying a wreath at the foot of the flagpole at the school,” said Dykes.

Junior Legion Baseball in Easley? Commander Gary Hinton said at the meeting that he has received a couple calls on a possible Easley Junior Legion baseball team in the future.

Ending thought: Next summer is a great time to honor Gregg Powell and all of the legion baseball teams that he coached. Bring out the old legion jerseys of those teams, scrapbooks and relive those great memories.

Mark these dates: The next pancake breakfast at Post 52 will be Saturday, Sept. 6 from 8 to 10:30 a.m. and the next fish fry will be Friday, Sept. 19 from 5 to 8 p.m.
