POWDERSVILLE — Being able to run the football for any team is essential. It quickly opens up the passing game and it wears down the defense.

The Powdersville football team — one can bet — will have a solid running attack this season. Despite the Patriots 56-35 loss to Seneca last Friday night, they still put up solid numbers in the running game. The talented Nasir Waldrop rushed 20 times for 124 yards (6.2 avg.) with a 27-yard run being his longest.

“Nasir is a shifty kid,” said PHS Coach Robert Mustar, at a recent scrimmage. “He’s gonna make people miss and he’s gonna give some people some problems. We have some guys out there making blocks for him and – when that happens – that’s usually a pretty good recipe for something good to happen.”

Senior Zach Taylor is one of the leaders on the Patriots O Line at Right Guard.

“I feel like we are really physical up front,” said Taylor. “We all do our job and we’re really good in the running game.”

Taylor has a 4.1 grade point average and hopes to one day play college football. His sports idol is Clemson University lineman Trent Williams.

“He (Williams) is very physical and fires off the ball,” Taylor said. “He is the right tackle and is number 78. He’s really good and really fast. He likes to push people over and that’s what every offensive lineman wants to do nowadays. I go to pretty much every home Clemson home football game that I can.”

Taylor also said he thought they moved the ball well against Westside in a preseason scrimmage.

It should be interesting how the run game develops this season for the Powdersville Patriots. Waldrop could have a monster season running the football and getting that extra block to break the big run.
