Red Devils coach to lead SC in Shrine Bowl

LIBERTY — Liberty High School announced on Friday their own Head Football Coach Paul Sutherland has been named the head coach of the South Carolina team for the 2025 Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas.

PICKENS COUNTY — The School District of Pickens County (SDPC) recently announced Elizabeth Gunnels, a fifth-grade teacher at Liberty Elementary School, has been named the 2025–2026 District Teacher of the Year and April Heard, Administrative Assistant for SDPC’s Transportation Department, has been named the 2025–2026 District Support Employee of the Year.

SDPC: McKissick earns national STEM certification

EASLEY — McKissick Academy of Science and Technology (MAST), a Pre-K to 5th grade magnet school in the School District of Pickens County, has officially earned Cognia STEM Certification, joining an elite group of elementary schools in South Carolina and across the nation recognized for excellence in science, technology, engineering, and math education. MAST is now one of only a few elementary schools in South Carolina, and among just over 400 worldwide, to meet Cognia’s high standards for STEM excellence. Cognia’s STEM Certification is awarded only after a rigorous evaluation process, including virtual visits, interviews, and evidence-based reviews that assess a school’s ability to deliver high-quality, integrated STEM instruction across all grade levels.

Wines & Equines fundraising event for Happy Hooves

MARIETTA — On Saturday, September 27, Happy Hooves Therapeutic Equestrian Center will be hosting their 13th annual Wines & Equines fundraising event at Eden Farms located at 4700 Dacusville Highway, Marietta, SC 29661. Doors open at 5:00 pm. Guests will be treated to a barbecue dinner catered by Mutt’s BBQ of Easley, and wine and beer served by Haulin’ Hops of Travelers Rest, while bidding on silent and live auction items in the beautiful setting of Eden Farms.

Bipartisan AGs support veteran wounded in Afghanistan

SOUTH CAROLINA – A bipartisan group of 20 attorneys general filed a brief with the Supreme Court of the United States in support of a veteran who was wounded in Afghanistan as a result of a private contractor’s negligence. The veteran is now fighting to hold the contractor accountable.

Pickens County Habitat for Humanity receives Walmart Spark Good Local Grant

CLEMSON — Pickens County Habitat for Humanity (PCHFH) has been awarded a $2,000 Spark Good Local Grant from Walmart.org, funding that will directly support the organization’s annual Homecoming Build in Clemson.
